During its last Council meeting on April 8, 2021 the ISU decided to adopt the IOC Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Declaration, a historic athlete-driven initiative. Developed by athletes and for athletes through a worldwide consultation process; led by a 19-strong athlete representative Steering Committee.

The Athletes’ Declaration outlines a common set of aspirational rights and responsibilities for athletes within the Olympic Movement. It is inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other internationally recognized human rights standards, principles and treaties. Its objective is to guide the Olympic Movement’s actions. All members of the Olympic Movement, particularly the International Olympic Committee, the International Sports Federations and the National Olympic Committees, will strive to promote respect for these rights and responsibilities. They are encouraged to develop mechanisms for effective remedies related to these rights and responsibilities, and athletes are encouraged to make use of these mechanisms.

The Declaration was developed to benefit Athletes globally and with the collaboration of the athlete community the overarching goal is to further support athletes —the project tackles the most relevant issues they face today, including integrity and clean sport, governance and communication, careers and marketing, safeguarding and competition.
